Implementasi Tahun Kunjungan Wisata

Implementasi Tahun Kunjungan Wisata
Salam Tribun

Pemerintah berharap pencanangan tahun wisata 2008, sekaligus peringatan seratus tahun Hari Kebangkitan Nasional mampu mengundang wisatawan mancanegara hingga 7 juta orang.
Bahkan, seluruh komponen masyarakat hendaknya berpartisipasi menyukseskan tahun kunjungan wisata Indonesia 2008.
Dalam mengisi kegiatan Visit Indonesia Year 2008, Provinsi Bengkulu yang bukan daerah tujuan wisata andalan pun tak ingin ketinggalan. Gubernur Bengkulu, Agusrin Maryono Najamudin, Rabu (9/1), membuka Festival Tabot 2008 di kawasan wisata Tapak Paderi, Kota Bengkulu. Festival itu menjadi agenda pertama program Visit Indonesia Year 2008.

Tropical spices 101:Cloves

Cloves are one of the most pungent and unique spices. The Dutch held a monopoly over production and trade of the spice, native to the North Moluccas (Indonesia), up until the 18th century.

Clove trees are sensitive tropical evergreen trees from the myrtle family. They grow up to 15 meters in height and at the end of each small branch small crimson flowers grow in triple clusters. Harvesting is first done when a tree reaches six to eight years of age and continues for 50 years, although each tree usually only delivers one bumper crop in four years. Rough handling during harvest will mean diminishing yields later and, thus, the trees are handled with extreme care. The Scottish anthropologist James Frazer, in his 1890 publication, “The Golden Bough -- A Study in Magic and Religion,” wrote: “When the clove trees are in blossom, they are treated like pregnant women. No noise may be made near them; no light, no fire may be carried past them at night; no one may approach them with his hat on, all must uncover in their presence. These precautions are observed lest the tree should be alarmed and bear no fruit, or should drop its fruit too soon.

Searching for spirits in Indonesia

After visiting pagodas, churches, synagogues and mosques in five continents seeking the holiness humanity holds in common, in Jogjakarta, Indonesia, I saw one of the most elegant spiritual symbols of my life: a green elephant foot flower pot.

The icon in question, a green pillar emerging from a lotus flower blooming out of an elephant foot, was situated in Jogja's kraton, the palace of the city's sultan. The foot represents the island's base of Hinduism, the flower the coming of Buddhism, and from these two stem the modern Indonesian religion of Islam; the green pillar symbolizes the Islamic Five Pillars of Faith.
